Generic top-level domains for Pakistani businesses and organisations

Generic top-level domains, usually shortened to gTLDs, are the extensions not tied to any single country. The oldest and best known is .com, joined over the years by .net, .org, .info, .biz and many others. Because they carry no national label, they suit companies that trade across borders, freelancers with clients abroad and anyone who simply wants the address most people type out of habit.

For a Pakistani buyer, the main challenge has never been finding these names. It has been paying for them. International registrars bill in dollars and expect a credit card, while many local sellers add a heavy mark-up at renewal. We register every generic extension directly through accredited registry connections, bill in rupees and show the renewal rate right next to the opening price.

Our customers range from start-ups in Lahore's tech parks to exporters in Sialkot and Faisalabad who need a .com that buyers in Europe will trust, to NGOs in Islamabad that prefer the familiar .org. Each name is recorded with the customer as registrant, so ownership is never in doubt, and DNS settings can be edited from the same client area that holds your invoices.

Below you will find a guide to each popular extension, advice on protecting a brand across several of them and answers to the questions our support team hears most often. Individual pages such as .com registration, .net registration and .org registration go deeper into each extension, including current renewal and transfer rates. Just below the search box, a live table lists all eight generic extensions we carry, .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .asia, .mobi and .tel, with registration, renewal and transfer prices in rupees, and the quick-pick chips cover the five most requested.

Eight generic extensions and the job each one does best

Every gTLD in our table works the same way technically. What differs is the message each ending sends to a visitor.

.com for the widest audience

The default ending people type without thinking. Choose it when buyers abroad, investors or marketplaces will meet your brand before they meet your city or country.

.net for technical services

Historically linked with networks, it still suits ISPs, software houses, IT support firms and SaaS tools, and works as a sensible fallback when the matching .com is gone.

.org for causes and communities

Trusts, welfare societies, professional bodies, open-source projects and alumni groups use .org because readers associate it with a mission rather than a sales pitch.

.biz and .info for budget launches

.biz flags a commercial site, while .info suits guides, directories and campaign microsites. Both open at Rs 2,999, though their renewal fees are noticeably higher.

.asia for regional trade

Created for the Asia-Pacific community, .asia helps an exporter or logistics firm signal that it serves buyers across the region rather than one domestic market.

.mobi and .tel for contact-led sites

.mobi began as an ending for phone-friendly sites and .tel as a home for contact details. Both are low-cost choices for a simple landing or click-to-call page.

Registering .com and other gTLDs with a Pakistani provider

Every generic domain we register includes the following at no extra cost, except where noted.

Activation within minutes

Once payment clears, the name is created at the registry automatically. Card, JazzCash and Easypaisa payments are matched instantly, while bank transfers are confirmed as soon as you share the receipt with our billing team.

Whois that names you as owner

We register each gTLD with the details you provide at checkout. Enter your company name if the domain belongs to the business, because that record settles any later dispute with staff, partners or a former web developer.

DNS and custom name servers

Point the domain at any host, add records for email verification, redirect it to another site or create branded child name servers such as ns1.yourcompany.com if you run your own server or reseller account.

Optional privacy protection

Personal contact details can be masked in public whois where the registry allows it. Ask our team when ordering; a small charge may apply on some extensions, and company-owned names often do not need it.

Lower rates on bulk orders

Agencies, developers and companies registering many names at once can ask for a bulk quote. We review the extensions and quantities involved and reply with a rupee price before you place the order.

Multi-year registration

Most generic extensions can be registered or renewed for several years in a single payment, up to the ten-year limit set by ICANN. Longer terms protect you from future price changes and forgotten renewal emails.

Eight checks before you pay for a .com, .net or .org

A few minutes of checking now saves an awkward rebrand later.

  • Say the name aloud over the phone and confirm the listener spells it correctly
  • Search the exact name on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok for clashing handles
  • Check the IPO Pakistan trademark journal for a registered mark using the same word
  • Compare the renewal fee in our table, not only the first-year price
  • Use an email address you will still read in five years as the owner contact
  • Enter the legal business name as registrant when the domain belongs to a company
  • Turn on auto-renew or add the expiry date to your office calendar
  • Decide whether to hold the matching .pk so a competitor cannot take it

.com .net .org Domains

The trio of .com .net .org domains formed the original public internet in 1985 and still accounts for a large share of all registered names. Verisign runs .com and .net, while the Public Interest Registry manages .org, and all three are open to anyone in any country without documents.

The .com is the default. Voice assistants guess it first and many visitors type it by habit, so if your exact brand is free it is nearly always worth holding, even alongside a .pk. Registration costs Rs 3,429 with us and renewal Rs 4,299.

The .net was intended for network providers and still suits hosting firms, internet service providers, software tools and technical communities. It is also the usual fallback when the .com is taken. Registration costs Rs 3,889.

The .org has long been tied to charities, foundations, schools and professional bodies. No rule limits it to non-profits, but visitors read it that way, so a commercial shop on .org may confuse buyers. For alumni associations and community trusts in Pakistan it remains a natural fit, also at Rs 3,889.

If you can secure all three .com .net .org domains for one brand, point the extra two at your main site with a permanent redirect. That keeps search signals in one place, stops impostors and catches visitors who guess the wrong ending.

gTLD Registration

gTLD registration with WinsHosting is fully automatic. You search the name, add it to your cart, pay in rupees and our system submits the order to the registry within minutes. Once the payment clears, the domain sits in your client area with its own controls for name servers, DNS records, the transfer lock and auto-renewal.

Generic top-level domains are governed by ICANN contracts, so the same core rules apply whichever registrar you use. Contact details must be accurate, the registrant email must be verified when ICANN asks, and a new name cannot be transferred to another registrar for sixty days. Most registrations are for one year, and many extensions allow up to ten years in advance.

Paying for several years at once is sensible for a brand you intend to keep. It fixes today's rupee price for the whole term and removes the risk of a missed reminder. Registry wholesale fees for .com have risen several times in recent years, and our prices follow those changes.

Already hold a generic name elsewhere? A transfer through our domain transfer page needs the EPP code from your current registrar and usually completes in five to seven days. For new gTLD registration, though, simply search above and the name can be live within the hour.

Generic Top Level Domains

Generic top level domains, or gTLDs, are extensions that are not tied to a country. They differ from country codes such as .pk or .uk in who sets the rules: gTLDs follow policies agreed through ICANN, while each ccTLD is governed by its own national registry.

The first generic top level domains appeared in 1985 with .com, .net, .org, .edu, .gov and .mil, though only the first three became open to the public. In 2001 ICANN added .biz and .info, followed later by sponsored names such as .asia, .mobi and .tel. A much larger expansion began in 2013 with hundreds of new endings like .online, .store and .app, covered on our new domain extensions page.

For search, Google treats every generic extension as global. A .com site can rank in Pakistan, the Gulf or Britain depending on its content, links and the country target you set in Search Console. That flexibility makes gTLDs a good primary address for exporters, software houses and freelancers whose clients sit in several markets.

The trade-off is that a gTLD sends no local signal on its own. Businesses selling mainly inside Pakistan often pair their generic name with a .pk or .com.pk, using whichever reads better on signage as the main site and redirecting the other to it.

Best Domain Extension for Business

The best domain extension for business depends on where your customers are and how they will hear your address. A clinic in Multan, a courier-based clothing shop and a Karachi software exporter rarely need the same ending, so start from the buyer rather than from fashion.

If you sell abroad or plan to, a .com is still the strongest choice. It is the address people guess, it looks established on a quotation and it lets you target any market in Search Console. When the .com is taken, .net is the most familiar alternative for a commercial firm.

If nearly all your sales are inside Pakistan, a .pk or .com.pk often deserves the primary slot, with the matching .com held for protection. Non-profits, trusts and professional bodies usually suit .org best, while trading houses that want a plainly commercial label can consider .biz.

Whatever you choose, keep the name before the dot short, free of hyphens and easy to spell over the phone. Then test it: say the full address to a colleague and ask them to type it into WhatsApp. If they get it right first time, you have probably found the best domain extension for business use, and you can register it and any defensive variants from the search box above.

Confirm the ICANN verification email for your new gTLD

ICANN rules require registrars to verify the owner's email address after a generic domain is registered or its owner details change. A verification message arrives shortly after checkout; if nobody clicks the link within about 15 days, the domain can be suspended and your website and email stop working until it is confirmed.

Also note that a new or freshly transferred .com, .net or .org is normally locked against another transfer for 60 days. If you plan to move the name to a different registrar, wait until that period ends, or ask our support team to resend the verification email if it never reached you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a gTLD and a ccTLD domain?

A gTLD is a generic extension such as .com or .org that anyone in the world can use, governed by ICANN contracts. A ccTLD is a two-letter code assigned to a country or territory, such as .pk for Pakistan or .uk for Britain. Each ccTLD registry sets its own rules, which is why some require local residency and others, like .co or .tv, are open to all.

Is .com still worth buying in 2026 if my exact name is already taken?

Usually it is better to choose a slightly different .com, or a strong alternative extension, than to buy a cluttered name stuffed with extra words. Short, pronounceable addresses get remembered and shared. If the taken .com belongs to an unrelated business abroad, a .pk or a descriptive newer extension can work well for a Pakistani audience.

Why is the renewal price of a .com higher than the first-year price?

The first-year rate on many extensions is a promotional figure, while renewal reflects the full registry cost plus our margin. Verisign's agreement with ICANN also allows it to raise the wholesale .com fee in some years, and those increases are passed through by every registrar. Comparing renewal prices is the fairest way to judge sellers.

Does ICANN charge a fee on every generic domain I register?

Yes, ICANN collects a small fee of twenty US cents per domain per year on generic extensions to fund its work coordinating the domain name system. The fee is already included in the rupee price we show, so you will not see it as a separate line on your invoice.

How long can a .com or .net domain name be?

The part before the dot can be up to 63 characters and may contain letters, numbers and hyphens, but it cannot begin or end with a hyphen. In practice, anything over about fifteen characters becomes hard to type on a phone and easy to misspell, so keep it as short as your brand allows.

Can a business use a .org domain if it is not a charity?

Technically yes. The .org registry places no eligibility test on registrants, so a company, club or individual may hold one. The question is perception: visitors often assume a .org is non-profit, and a commercial store on that extension can look odd. It suits associations, community projects, educational initiatives and professional bodies best.

Does Google rank .com websites above .net or .biz ones?

No. Google has said it treats all generic extensions the same way for ranking. What matters is content quality, page speed, links from other sites and how well the page answers the search. The extension can still affect click-through, because people are more likely to trust and click an address that looks familiar.

Can I register a domain name in Urdu script?

Some generic registries support internationalised domain names in non-Latin scripts, and Urdu uses an Arabic-based alphabet. Support differs by extension, and many email systems and older apps still handle these names poorly. If you want one, ask our team to check availability for your chosen extension, and keep a Latin-script name as your main address.
